"Gillis, Justin . "Study Finds More of Earth Is Hotter and Says Global Warming Is at Work." New York Times 08 07 2012, pA13(L)
According to a new scientific paper, the percentage of earth’s land surface covered by extreme heat has increased exponentially. Before 1980 it was 1 percent, and now it is as increased as much as 13 percent. These claims were reinforced by James E. Hansen, a well known NASA climate scientist, and two co-authors. The problem is that these claims go beyond the established scientific consensus about the role of climate change in causing weather extremes. Dr. Hansen says that by looking at the statistics you can see that the climate changes are too large to be natural. Unfortunately, Dr. Hansen has been accused of manipulating the temperature record to make global warming seem more serious. Although no proof has been found to prove him guilty of this accusation, it does play a role in how his statements are perceived by his colleagues. Dr. Hansen claims that the climate will only get worse and worse.

In 1995 an eight-day heat wave in Chicago, Ill struck causing a total of 566 deaths
because of the heat. Scientists questioned if it was just a random occurrence, or if this was a result of the greenhouse effect. In 1970 some scientists began predicting that the increase of man-caused gases would trap excessive heat near the earth’s surface. The problem with predicting weather for scientists is deciding weather modern whether patterns are due to human activity or if it is just the earth’s natural ways. This is the main reason why scientists are not to quick to believe in global warming. None the less, global warming has received attention from policy makers worldwide. Mainly, scientists just believe that more research needs to be done before coming to the conclusion that human activity is the result of global warming. Despite critics there are still a growing number of scientists that believe human activity may be a big impact on global warming.
""Merzer, Martin. "Global warming a human creation, scientists confirm." Miami Herald 02 02 2007, Final 1A.
Scientist have agreed that global warming is caused by human activity, and is producing a dramatic rise in temperature, and ocean levels. Scientists have also agreed that global warming is increasing the intensity of hurricanes. Scientists have also stated that even if the greenhouse gases were to be stabilized it wouldn’t affect much at the moment. There is no serious scientific debate on the fact that global warming is real. Although the affect of global warming on hurricane intensity is still being debated. Some scientists still don’t believe enough proof is there to figure out how much global warming affects hurricane intensity. The primary human activity that contributes to global warming is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, gasoline and natural gases. Constant debate over global warming continues to undergo instead of doing something about it, making global
warming seem more politicized.
""Chandler, Clay. "Heated Debate - Global Warming Casts Light on Human Behavior Because Potential Dangers Lie Decades Away, Americans are Reluctant to Change - Their Ways of Consuming Energy." Orlando Sentinel 30 11 1997, Metro G1.
Bill Clinton talks about why if we as a human race know about global warming and the potential dangers it proposes, why don’t we do anything about it. Clinton mentions how deep the answer goes because the lack of humans will to make a change is a part of their human nature. People see that the effects of global warming will hit decades, maybe centuries from now, so the problem does not affect them directly. People would much rather reap benefits now and suffer in the long run, then to make a sacrifice now and be benefited in the long run. Clinton used regular light bulbs that consume a lot of energy as an example, saying that people rather use that because it’s cheaper opposed to energy efficient light bulbs which will save them money in the long run because it lasts longer. People do not think far into the future but rather look at what is going on now.

The author starts off the book with the basics of global warming. He discusses the science behind climate change and what it really is. He gradually goes deeper bringing up the scientific research made towards global warming. He then tells the reader about the issues and complexity of global warming. The public’s opinion on global warming is also mentioned in the book. He drifts on into talking about the weather and how it is changing. One thing he mentions is the change in the Hydrological Cycle. He speaks on climate change mainly in the United States and Canada, and then moves on to its impact internationally. Then climate change in the Artic is discussed, mentioning how the rising temperature are causing the Antarctic Ice to melt. The warming of the seas is brought up next. He states how the sea level is rising, all the different changes in the ocean and how it affects marine life. Also he writes extinctions that could occur because of global warming and the effects of it on human health. He finishes the book off with possible solutions for this problem, trying to figure out what works best, globally and locally.
“Global Warming: The Signs and the Science.” Public Broadcasting Service: PBS, 02 2005. Television. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVQnPytgwQ0.
This documentary is about global warming. It points out that over Earth’s history it has had numerous ice ages and warming periods, so what should make it different now. Then it also points out how human beings have put themselves in the picture making matters even worse. It says how we have seen more droughts, fires, floods, and stronger hurricanes. According to the documentary these things are a result of the changing climate which humans have provoked. In the documentary they go all across America interviewing all types of people, getting their opinion on the climate change. The documentary opens up questions about what could be done to slow down, and then eventually stop the issue of global warming. It discusses how people across America are becoming more aware of the issue at hand, and starting to take action. They have a strong determination to put a stop to global warming before it gets worse and they are taking initiatives.

This article pinpoints the efforts of people making an effort to combat climate change. The author spoke of reasons why people were deciding to make a stand, such as the Keystone XL pipeline or to get businesses to engage in more sustainable practices. The article points out how the Keystone Xl pipeline protest was the largest act of civil disobedience for the climate in US history. The author talks about the Arab Spring and its potential benefit in the middle East. He notes how an investment in it promises sustainable energy to the region. The author mentions another protest, “COP 17” where about 20,000 people from all over the world took to the streets in Durban calling for action. The Michigan State University protest is mentioned along with a list of environmental events that have taken place. Lastly he notes how businesses are listening to the plea of the people, whether they want to or not.

These authors primary focus was to improve Americans knowledge on global warming. They felt that many Americans had a lack of knowledge towards the subject which made them least likely to accept that it is true, so they wrote the basic mechanism of how global warming works, and what the greenhouse affect really is. They thoroughly explain what global warming is. They start off with the basics making it easy and simple to understand for the average American. To prove their theory, that many Americans had a lack of knowledge for global warming, they surveyed 270 people at a San Diego park. With their results they proved that their theory was correct. After that they explained to people what global warming really is and how the greenhouse affect works. They found out that people quickly learn what it is and they accept it more. They finish off with a conclusion that many more people will accept global warming after they thoroughly learn about it.
